Waiting For YOU!!
Back in 1995, while living on my own in a one bedroom apartment I longed for a roommate that would greet me every time I came home. A roommate that was easy to care for, low maintenance, and like to cuddle. For me that perfect roommate became my first cat, Sadie.
At the time a close friend of mine, whom is now my sister-in-law, helped me find Sadie by taking me to a no kill cat shelter uniquely called The Scratching Post. I knew exactly what I wanted, a gray & white kitten. Upon entering the shelter I was reminded how allergic I was to cats, but I didn’t care. I had never had a pet and I was bound and determined I was going to make it work allergies or not.
Sadie
There she was sitting on top of a cage, and she perked up when I walked in. I looked at my friend, Michelle, smiled and said “There she is.” Sure enough it was the kitten that I envisioned in my head. Not a new born, but not full grown either. She was 6 months old and I made her mine.
Since 1995 Sadie and I have moved a few times, and each time she adjusted very well. The last adjustment was moving here on the farm, where she has settled into being a farm cat. Over the years she’s welcomed a sibling (Shadow ~ a stray cat), my husband, two dogs, and my three boys into our lives.
To this day she enjoys lounging on my outdoor furniture, chasing mice in the pasture, and prefers drinking water from the creek. Thank you Michelle for helping me find my roommate, and Scratching Post for taking good care of her until I adopted her.
After visiting The Scratching Post and hearing about other shelters such as Ohio Alleycat Resource I have noticed that not only do they need monetary donations, but they can also use supplies such as cat litter, food, etc. Shelters such as these as well as others make adopting happy and healthy kittens and cats possible. Just like my story.
If you or your family is longing for a pet please visit a shelter first. You never know who could be waiting for you!
If you’ve been blessed with an animal from a shelter please share your story. I’d love to hear it!!

I agree. Visit a shelter. So many animals needs homes. We have two adopted dogs.
Hi Sherry!
Just wanted to say that we adopted 2 kittens from the Scratching Post back in 1997 and then another just last year. They all have been WONDERFUL cats…. low maintenance, people friendly, healthy, loving cats. I always recommend people go there when they are looking to adopt a kitten/cat. The women there really know the cats they have and will help make sure you end up with the one (or two) that is right for you.
Thanks for sharing your story!

Excellent…thanks so much for sharing! Love your photo of little Sadie! I wish everyone had such a positive spirit and love for cats! There are so many out there that need good homes. Also, so many people, that if they gave a kitty a chance, would find so much love and affection for them, that they never knew was possible! After my childhood cat, Thomasina passed away at age 20 in 1996 (yesterday was the 13th anniversary of her death,) I thought I would never get another cat again until my first cat Newman in 2004. My parents…still working on them to get another.
Also appreciate sharing the link on OAR…any word we can get out is fantastic!
Thanks again for warming my heart with your great story!
Take care,
Sherry
My prissy girl was a great roommate for 17 years. The best unconditional love I every had. She has been gone for 3 years now. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Sherry–love the blog! I was an uptown girl until I met my husband and we moved out to the country, so I can definitely relate to some of your antecdotes. Lots of good stories on a farm! And we adopted two dogs in July, a brother and a sister who were found starved roaming together. We adore them!
My heart hurts today, because Sadie is now resting in peace. I thank her for being my roommate, and adjusting to the changes in my life. She started out to be an indoor cat and once we moved to the farm she adjusted very well to being an outdoor cat. I miss you Sadie and love you.
